More than a palace visit
Athangudi Palace is one of the places that makes Chettinad architecture feel less like something you are simply looking at and more like something you are walking through. The mansion, officially known as Sri Letchmi Vilas and popularly called Periya Veedu, brings together expansive spaces, detailed craftsmanship and a fascinating story of the Chettiar community.
Located in Athangudi, about 15 km from Karaikudi, it works naturally as part of a Chettinad heritage itinerary. Give yourself time to look beyond the large halls: the ceilings, floors, pillars, windows and construction details are where the character of the house really reveals itself.
The story behind Periya Veedu
Athangudi Palace was built as the hometown residence of Shri N. AR. Nachiappa Chettiar. Construction began in 1929 and was completed in 1932. The official palace history records that the house covers about 1.08 acres and was built with the involvement of around 150 workers, including masons, painters, blacksmiths, artists and carpenters.
The house was named Sri Letchmi Vilas after Shri N. AR. Nachiappa Chettiar's beloved mother and daughter. Its scale eventually led people to call it Periya Veedu, meaning Big House, and the name Athangudi Palace became widely associated with the property.
1929–1932
Three years of construction brought together a large team of skilled craftsmen and workers.

A Chettinad mansion built with remarkable craft
The palace is a striking example of the way Chettinad homes combined local building knowledge with materials, ideas and craftsmanship gathered through the region's trading connections. The official history notes that the house was completed without electricity, cement or modern construction tools.
Its construction used lime-based wall finishes and traditional materials, while interlocking ceiling elements, stone pillars, wooden members and riveted metalwork demonstrate the ingenuity of the craftsmen who worked on the house.
The palace is described by its official site as having 60 rooms and 250 windows, with decorated ceilings and a remarkable collection of architectural details.
